Yusuf, a Curie House pupil in year 7 (C4) is celebrating after winning a gold medal in the British Masters Taekwondo Championship. Yusuf fought in cadet under 41kg weight division. He has been training at the Gurumu Taekwondo Talent Club in East Ham for two years and has now been entered for the Ranking Championship for the British Nationals which will take place in September 2016. All sports events that take place are approved by the National Governing Body of GB Taekwondo.
Gurumu Taekwondo is one of only five clubs in Great Britain to be awarded GB Taekwondo’s respected ‘Talent Club’ status and aims to inspire pupils at Olympic level, leading the way for Taekwondo awarded sports clubs.
‘I really hope that this inspires other pupils to take up sports activities. Winning the British Masters has given me confidence for the Nationals in September. Training at school in PE lessons has also helped and encouraged me in sports.’ Yusuf, year 7.
In the short two years that Yusuf has been training at his Taekwondo club, he has taken home two gold medals, one silver and one bronze and also commits to regular training sessions after school every Monday and Wednesday.
‘Yusuf’s performance was phenomenal, he has come a long way. Gurumu Taekwondo is here to provide a positive and motivating training environment, promoting and aiming to develop courage and self-confidence, boosting communication skills and helping to improve mental discipline.‘ British Taekwondo Coach, Sivakumar Ramasamy.
We are proud to see pupils of all abilities identifying and developing their talents and do encourage more individuals to aspire to be recognised for their contributions to extra-curricular activities and interests.
