Urban Debate League Round 2: A Competitive Showcase of Young Talent

Upton Lane, 5th March – Around 200 students gathered for an exciting and competitive second round of the Urban Debate League, where schools including Mulberry, Lister, and Forest Gate Academy showcased their debating prowess. This event marked an important opportunity for students to enhance their public speaking and critical thinking abilities while diving into relevant, thought-provoking topics.
The debate included both a prepared motion and an unprepared motion, sparking discussions on issues such as retribution vs. rehabilitation and the influence of celebrity figures in modern society. For many novice debaters, the event presented a unique blend of fun and challenge—particularly for Year 7 students who were up against the more experienced Year 9 and Year 10 participants.
One student shared, “It was really tough debating against older students, but I had so much fun and can’t wait to continue my debating journey!” This sentiment encapsulates the spirit of the event, where students not only developed valuable skills but also enjoyed the excitement of spirited, respectful competition.
The Urban Debate League Round 2 served as a fantastic platform for young minds to engage in discussions that are shaping our world, while honing the communication skills they’ll need for success in the future. The event was a resounding success, and participants are eager for the next round of intellectual challenges.
